Migraines and Food Triggers

Chiropractic West Des Moines IA Migraines and Food Triggers

One of the most common issues we see at Vero Health Center in West Des Moines are migraines. Luckily, we are able to help many of the migraine sufferers we serve lower the occurence of their migraines while under neurologically-based chiropractic care.

Some of our practice members have actually seen their migraines reduce significantly - if not completely!

However, if getting to a chiropractor right away to treat your migraines isn't an option, there are things you can do on your own to help decrease your potential for migraines. What many people don't realize is that the easiest way to prevent migraines is through diet changes. There are several food triggers that can cause migraines to present themselves.

What Foods Can Trigger Migraines?

Now, food triggers and migraines vary greatly based on the individual, so keeping a food diary and migraine log would be beneficial to pinpoint a correlation between diet and symptoms.

Here is a list of common food categories that can trigger or magnify migraines:

  • Amino Acids: Found in Chocolate, Aged/Fermented Cheese, Nuts, Citrus Fruits, Olives, Avocado, Red Plums and Red and Balsamic Vinegar
  • Monosodium Glutamate (MSG): Found in Asian-influenced food, Many prepackaged foods like barbeque sauce and ketchup.
  • Aspartame: Found in Diet Food, Sugar Free Foods, Splenda, NutraSweet or Equal
  • Sulfites: Found in Red Wine, Processed Foods, Tea, Red-Skinned Apples or Pears, Beans
  • Choline and Casein: Found in Sour Cream and Whole Milk
  • Alcohol: Beer and wine can be huge triggers for migraines for a couple reasons. First, because of the amino acid, tyramine mentioned above. Second, because they can cause dehydrate which can worse migraines.
  • Caffeine: Found in Coffee, Tea, Chocolate and Energy Drinks. In some cases caffeine can actually help combate headaches, so it is important to keep a food diary.
  • Nitrites: Found in Hot Dogs, Deli Meats, Pepperoni, Bacon and Sausages

If you are struggling to find possible triggers, please bring in your food and migraine log and we would be happy to help find the possible cause.
